Nahua filmmaker José Luis Matías (El mineral o la vida, Poder pa’l pueblo) continues his work on issues related to indigenous sovereignty. Here he documents how the Na Savi (Mixtecos) and Me'phaa (Tlapanecos) restored the old processes for choosing community representatives, making Ayutla the first municipality in Guerrero to be ruled by elected authorities according to the ancestral “usos y costumbres”. A breach is thus opened in the onerous colonial structure.
