Synopsis

On November 20, 1969, seventy-nine American Indians, led by activist Richard Oakes, took boats to Alcatraz Island and occupied the decaying former federal prison. Citing the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, which stipulated that any unused federal lands should revert to Native American control, the occupiers claimed the island for the “Indians of All Tribes.”
